Immunizations:


Vaccine-Preventable disease is a serious problem in West Virginia.  
 •  Pneumonia and influenza are the sixth leading causes of death in West Virginia 
 •  Eighteen percent of West Virginia children are not properly immunized 
 •  Over 70 percent of the 140,000 new cases of hepatitis B each year strike adolescents 

Immunization Schedules:

Children age 0-6 need the following vaccinations: 

Hepatitis B, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Haemphilus Influenza Type B (HIB), Pneumococcal, Inactivated Poliovirus, Influenza, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (Chickenpox), and Hepatitis A. Certain high risk groups may need a Meningococcal immunization.  

Children age 7-18 need the following vaccinations: 

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Human Papillomavirus (HPV)(females only), Meningococcal, influenza, and Hepatitis B.  Certain high risk groups may need pneumococcal, influenza, and hepatitis A.  If previously missed, catch-up vaccinations are necessary for Hepatitis B, Inactivated Poliovirus, Measeles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (Chickenpox).

Adults need the following vaccinations:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Human Papillomavirus (HPV)(females only), Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (Chickenpox), Influenza, Pneumococcal, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Meningococcal.

Vaccine Infomation Statements:

Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) are information sheets produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that explain to vaccine recipients, their parents, or their legal representatives both the benefits and risks of a vaccine. Federal law requires that VISs be handed out whenever (before each dose) certain vaccinations are given.  Click here to review the vaccine information statements.

School Entry Requirements & Recommendations:

The WVDHHR Immunization Program's website has a list of immunization recommendations and requirements for school entry.  West Virginia does not allow for non-medical exemptions for school entry.  To view the latest requirements and recommendations visit this link.
